How to convert cups to grams

  1. Choose the ingredient — a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of sugar.
  2. Type the number of cups, for example 1, 0.5, 3/4 or 1 1/2.
  3. Read the weight in grams, or type grams to get cups.

How much does 1 cup weigh in grams?

A cup is a volume, so its weight depends on the ingredient: 1 cup of all-purpose flour is about 125 g, but 1 cup of granulated sugar is 200 g and 1 cup of honey 339 g. The US customary cup is 236.6 ml.

Weights per US cup come from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy household measures; FDC IDs 168894, 169655, 168833, 169656, 173410, 171265, 169640, 172336, 169593, 168877, 173904). Water is based on 1 ml ≈ 1 g. Real weights vary with how you fill the cup — spooned and levelled flour weighs less than scooped flour — so use a kitchen scale when precision matters. Recipes from Australia and New Zealand use a 250 ml metric cup, about 6% larger.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is 1 cup of flour?

About 125 g of all-purpose flour per US cup (USDA). Scooping straight from the bag packs it and can give noticeably more, so spoon it into the cup and level it.

How many grams is 1 cup of sugar?

About 200 g of granulated white sugar. Packed brown sugar is about 220 g per cup and unsifted powdered sugar about 120 g.

How many grams is 1 cup of butter?

About 227 g — that's two US sticks of butter.

How big is a cup?

The US customary cup used in American recipes is 236.6 ml. Australia and New Zealand use a 250 ml metric cup.

Why not just multiply by 236.6?

That only works for water and liquids with a similar density. Flour, sugar and cocoa are lighter or heavier than water, so each ingredient has its own weight per cup.
